1998 Olds Intrigue - 3.8L V6 ABS Light on, No Communication

Post by Hardwood »

As the title states, I have a 1998 Olds Intrigue with the ABS light on but unable to pull codes. I have a Modis running 8.4 and has me using no key, which is normal. I can communicate with the Engine and Trans and BCM, but no communication with the ABS computer to pull codes.

Troubleshooting has me checking the serial data wire from the ABS computer (blue wire pin 1) to the serial data splice connector to the purple ALDL wire. All good there. Still no communication.

Tried with a Solus and same results.

Anyone know of another way to pull ABS codes from this system? The ABS computer is separate from the master cylinder (under the left side of the dash and resembles a PCM, only a little smaller).

$75 for a used ABS computer but I don't want to try that just yet.....

Anyone?

I would try another scanner; do you have access to one?

checking the wiring at the plug is just n.o.p. it basically will tell you if there is power. there is a t.s.b. on this particular car for this particular reason # 83-50-08. it says there is an issue with the traction control module / abs module and it's a recall issue. now have saying that, i will not keep recall information away from customers. i know there are shops that do and will either tell customer later that there is a recall and apply for a refund or not tell them at all. i will do a complete inspection of the system and point out any issues that may need to be addressed prior to going to the dealer for the warranty work. some dealers will upsell claiming that the recall work can't be performed with the vehicle in the present condition. if the brakes are at all questionable warn the customer and advise not to under any circumstances agree to any work other than what's offered under the recall.
never argue with a fool, they'll drag you down to their level and beat you with experience

Thanks for the TSB reference. Pretty old, since the TSB states the problem was resolved during production in mid-1997.

I forgot to mention this is our shop's loaner car... Recently obtained from a customer who upgraded their ride.

It's been loaned out daily now and when I get a chance, I can run more tests.

Steve- yes, we have power, captain! Not the kind of guy to come in here without having at least checked the basics

And yes, recall info should be passed along to the customer. The "cred" you gain is well worth the $$ you may lose by not doing the job.

Been doing this for 22+ years and I cannot tell you how many times a customer comes back to me after a recall was performed. Thanking me and giving me every other bit of service they can!

So, I will keep checking in here periodically with updates. Seriously doubt the dealer will give me a computer based on a TSB dated March 1998. But then again, you never know until you ask!

Cheers!

@ brianp87 -

No, I have a Modis and the body shop next door has a Solus. Both cannot communicate.

I have friends further away that may have a Genisys and a sorta-friend who works for a GM dealer. Tech 2 would be the best choice if possible.
