i have a 97 mazda protege w/ 1.5 auto. the overdrive like will start blinking every once in a while and put the car in overdrive. i have scanned the computer and i will get a speed sensor code. could a speed sensor cause this or is the tranny on its way out?

A blinking light typically is the computers way of telling you there is a problem, such as the MIL. Are you saying the light starts to blink and the transmission goes into high gear?
Speed sensor will usually cause them to fall out of overdrive.

Check the resistance of the sensor. If its is ok then test the wiring to the ecm.

If the sensor, wiring, to sensor and ecm are all good then it has to be an internal problem

I would recommend you scope the output of the sensor and compare it to a known good signal.

even the dealer said there are wiring issues with these beauties. the leads have a habit of backing out of multi-plug.

there are solonoids in the tranny that can cause these issues. too much line pressure can cause this.
