2008 GMC G3500 - 6.6L Rotten Egg Smell

Post by liljoe »

I have got a 2008 G3500 with the 6.6 Duramax, at idle it has a real bad sulfer smell from the exhaust, after extended idle last night (6hrs) it smoked real bad for about two miles (white). I will be getting this van (ambulance) a little latter this morning and will not have much time with it and was wondering if anyone has any ideas I need to start at. They are short on amulances right now and I will not have much in the way of time for it, so any help will be greatly apperciated by all the sick and injured people in our town....... The smell is supposed to be so bad it gets inside the van and smells it up real bad. Have not seen it yet, just got a phone call on it for now.

It has a particulate filter and an oxidation catalist on it, the milage was at 165k about a month ago. Don't know how long the warranty is on it.

Check the mass air. Ive seen the air filter glue come off and get on the sensor.

Is the "Clean Exhaust Filter" message on in the message center? If it is and in this case this vehicle does alot of idling, the filter may need to be cleaned by doing an extended drive cycle. The PCM does not run the Filter Cleaning Cycle during idle. This could explain the smell.

all of a sudden I am back in 1990. 1981Mercury Zephyr 200 ci L6. change plugs, air filter, spray 2+2 and vroom, vroom on the throttle linkage. add a bottle of $15 "gaurenteed to pass" to 1/4 tank of fuel. spend the morning driving up and down I95 to "burn the carbon out". Take er to the inspection station and say do the emissions first. Woo Hoo got my sticker. :D

yep, a zephyr or a granada. a 429 punched out. i could go with a 302 as well. take the 351's and melt them down. i had a guy wander in and ask me if i knew how to set up a car for the drag strip. i asked him at what level he wanted to run at. i had to install a line lock, he didn't want to do the transmission lock, run a frame support, kill switch and a few other basic things. it had a big block in it. for some reason it just looked good and i wanted one. gotten past it but ya, i want to stuff a big block into a zephyr or granada/monarch. a four door, i love sleepers.
