Supersede in Inventory

I have searched and could not find anywhere exactly how to use the supersede feature and exactly what it does. I am also new to inventory since it was introduced.

The supersede button is on the part record itself.

The button will create a new part record connected to the first. The new record will have a reference to the original in the title bar like this....

When you are adding a part to an order that has been superseded, you'll get this.....

This gives you the opportunity to add the old part if you still have some or the new part if you're all out of the old.

Bear in mind you cannot supersede a part to an existing part in inventory, only a new one created by using the supersede button.

6099 Supercede

New parts come along to replace older versions; typically the new part is an improved design, has provisions to fit a wider array of vehicles or maybe just a different supplier. The logic behind Supercede creates a one-way relationship where the new part replaces the old but not vice-versa. The Supercede is created in the old part which you have as an existing Inventory record. Once completed, both options will be presented in future sales. Please note that you cannot Supercede to an existing part #; in those situations consider linking those records using Alternate Part as discussed in another video.
To supersede an inventory item, locate the old part from within the Inventory List; choose Edit to display the Edit Part dialog box. Click on Supersede; a dialog box explains that the procedure will allow the creation of a “copy” part record to supersede the current part. Click OK. The Edit Part window displays information from the previous part for the new part. Enter the new part number; if you do not change the part number, the supersession will not take place. Click OK to save your superseded part number. Change any other fields or options as needed. Confirm on-hand quantity if any at this time. A dialog box asks you to confirm the saving of this new part number. Select Yes to create the new part number.
When adding the old part number to an estimate or order, a split-screen will appear providing the option to use the original part OR the new part. It also displays the on-hand quantities of both. Users can make an informed decision as to which should be used on this order. Typically the shop would sell the older part until they are all gone. When adding the new part number to an estimate or order, the split screen will not appear. This is because the part entered was the new one and the logic is that the older park lacks something that the newer part has.

Didn't even know about the supersede option.

Now on some of the stuff I keep inventory like a 3057 Bulb the part number where we stock from in 3057BP if i recall correctly. If I do 3057 supersedes 3057BP while I am in an Invoice and click on parts will it pop up and take away from inventory of the 3057BP?

or same thing with Oil Filters etc to order them through SE I need to have their Part # in there the way the Parts place has it marked. Originally if its 107MP can I have 107 supersede 107MP, then when I order 107 will it show up as 107MP on their end or will it show 107 the newly created Part #?

If you scroll up, you'll see that I posted a pic of the 'choice' window that pops up when you add a part that has been superseded. You see both parts and quantities for each. If you still have some of the old number, you can choose that. If you've used up all of your old stock, the quantity will show zero, so naturally you'd choose the new number.

Each part is it's own record and independent of what your supplier may do. You're going to set the old number to zero stocking level because you know it's been superseded. Set the new number to your desired stocking level and reorder this item. That should avoid confusion with your inventory numbers.
