Ford Super Duty Crank Sensors Tip

Post by steven kiser »

Just a quick tip here about the crank sensors on the dsl super duties. a shop i rent space to had a super duty that had an intermittent start issue. he was getting a weird signal pattern from the crank sensor and after replacing it numerous times with factory sensors and replacing the connector along with reflashing the pcm told the customer that it would be better if it went to the dealer. off it went and the dealer charged 1,500.00 and said the crank would have to be replaced because of the cast reluctor was damaged on the crank. it was towed back and sat on my lot for 6 mos. last week it was towed into my tenants shop for an r&r. we had spoken at length about this and we agreed it made no sense. well the long and short of it was there was a buildup of rust at the very end of the bore in the block that was forcing the sensor off center causing it to read faulty. he cleaned the bore and problem solved. it's just one of these things we never think of when there's an issue. i have a spiral wire brush set that i use to clean all bore holes and it was so second nature i never even considered it wasn't done. goes to show ya...................

Good tip! Just like those GM truck abs sensors, right? Very interesting.

Thanks a million for the tip. I work on these powerstrokes alot. Have not encountered the rust problem but have seen many a crank sensor failure. It's great to have access to guys that take the time to post simple fixes like this. Thanks again and I hope I can return the favor in the future.
