Not posalutely necessary but I usually do because of hating to work over the front end and when you set the timing chains it is real easy if the engine is out.

yanking the engine may seem a bit extreme but in the long run i find it more prudent. it allows me to be detail orientated. now i'm 6'4" and a bit portly
. not built for under dash work and tight engine compartments. as a rule any time it's a toss up if it's easier to yank a mill out it comes. like i've said, it allows me to address the engine in a friendly work environment and i don't find myself relocating things. the engine goes back in with everything clean and lined up perfectly. it's not a job that someone can later point out issues to the customer. we've all seen jobs like this. a person comes into the shop and when you open the hood you see a certain amount of mmmmmmmm creativity. it may work great but things aren't just where they are supposed to be. i like to look at a completed job and see the harnesses all lined up, no kinks or splices, clean and shiny.
but then again there are techs out there that are 5', 110 lbs and can stretch out in a glove compartment. me, i'm a lift and slam type of guy. transmission jacks? a real mechanic doesn't need transmission jacks, we just lift it and slide it in.
i'm sitting here smiling remembering the good old days yelling at my helper to start a bolt because i'm loosing my grip on a c6 or the floor jack with the staging i built with wooden blocks is starting to shift. the day i purchased a transmission jack was looked at as a waste of money. the day i used it was looked at the end of an era. sitting here i'm wondering how many less aches and pains i would have if i didn't have the "cave man mentality" years ago.
well back to point here. no it isn't absolutely necessary if you're "stretch armstrong" and don't mind getting a face plant on occasion because you misjudged an angle or weight causing you body to see saw and slamming your face into something. you could let go of what you have in your hands with your arms extended but that isn't going to happen. we're men, and we'll ride it all the way down. the scars on my head aren't all from walking into or standing up into things. i've yelled at my tech's to let go and they don't. can't really get upset because i'd ride it down to.
it's like starting to swing the 3 lb mini sledge harder and wilder on a stubborn rotor and wondering why it flew out of your hands, flew across the shop, and hopefully slid to a stop without damaging something. after we walk across the shop and pick it up we look at the handle like something isn't right with it. yes we do, admit it. it's like when we put a 10' piece of pipe on the end of a 1/2" breaker bar, snap it and tell the tool guy "it just snapped". i gave my tool guy a breaker bar that i've snapped and he said "i've seen the ends snap before but i've never seen the shaft bent like that"
sorry for the ramble but it just hit me................

I agree with your point. Is the fan clutch nut clockwise or counter clockwise?

Usually they are counterclockwise for removal. I just took one out this morning.
