Memory or Lagging Issues?
Memory or Lagging Issues?
Has anyone else seen a memory or lagging issue with ShopKey? I am on version 7.0.11, using Windows 10 with 8 GB of memory. The processor is a Quad 4 or Quad 6, 2.87 AMD. It seems like that should be enough memory, etc., but I experience times when ShopKey is very slow. I can easily get almost a screen ahead of it when I am typing part numbers from inventory, etc. Input boxes seem to take forever to populate. I have called Tech Support and they went through with the database utility, with little to no change. I have defragged, cleaned temp files, removed programs from startup, etc. Nothing seems to help. It doesn't happen all the time, but seems to be especially bad after the computer has been up and running for a few hours, using ShopKey and my other programs. I even started using Chrome as my browser, instead of Firefox, because it seems to be better at memory management, but nothing seems to help.
Thoughts, suggestions, ideas?????

Larry,
When you get that kind of slow down on a machine that should be fine, it's typically one of two things: Malware or a rogue application.
Probably the easiest thing to do is run Task Manager (Right-click on an open spot on the Windows taskbar, choose Task Manager) and then look for what process is using the CPU, memory, or disk I/O. Usually one of those three will be near 100% usage.
Not uncommonly you may find it's your anti-virus software. It may need to be re-installed. But finding the culprit is the first step.

I have been searching my system to locate the culprit, but have been unable to find it. Nothing jumps out at me and I am fairly competent with such things.
My antivirus is Microsoft Essentials, so I would hope that wouldn't be the problem. And it seems that ShopKey is the only program affected, for the most part.

So no obvious offender in the Task Manager?
Edit: Also, the last call you made to us on 7/27 indicated it seemed to improve. Did that help for a period of time and then it started again?

Yes, that is correct. And it seems to get worse the longer the system is up and running.Silky7 wrote:So no obvious offender in the Task Manager?

Larry,
I'll get your database and load it here in the next couple of days. I'll check it to make sure there's no integrity problems with the database itself.

Re: Memory or lagging issues
The good news so far is the database has no obvious errors. So far it looks pretty normal, so I'll try to keep it up and running as long as possible to determine if I can replicate the slowdown you've been seeing.

Re: Memory or Lagging Issues?
I just wanted to let you guys know that i have the same issue, the only way that i have to resolve the issue is to reboot the host machine. It seems that the longer the application is open more then 7 days in my situation the larger the sqlserver.exe process gets, as soon as this process reaches about 1 GB is where we are running into issues with the system slowing down, becoming almost unusable. My research online shows that there is a limitation with SQLexpress 2005, 2008, and 2012 that only allows for this process to only grow to 1GB and then basically will not let it grow any further.
So i guess my bottom line question is, what is causing the database to eat up all the available memory in the SQLexpress.exe process since its limited to 1GB per Microsoft website, and if we cannot figure that out, can the application have some kind of cleanup code run to drop all of the "junk" so we do not have to keep rebooting our systems.
I have attempted to replicate in a non-production environment but it seems the only real way to make this issue happen is if you are seriously using the system like the techs do every day other wise the process just responds normally.

Re: Memory or Lagging Issues?
Our Database keeps getting larger and it keeps drawing windows resources, does not matter if Win7 or Win8. Its a problem that continues to get worse and make every computer that we have running Mitchell get slower and slower. adding memory does not help. the only thing that helped us a few machines was going to a Solid Sate Hard Drive. But this something Mitchell is going to have to address. On our computers if we shut off Mitchell and all associated Mitchel programs, our computers run fine.
Rebooting does help for a day or so, but that's not a permanent fix.
the reason I suspect it keeps getting worse is because, if over a wireless network, you have the wireless computers having to always access over 1GB data from the host.

Re: Memory or Lagging Issues?
I think I may have found the real culprit to the lagging issue I was having on our host machine. I had a computer tech come to our site to repair our wireless network. To do so, he had to use my computer and said he thought it was lagging a lot, with a lot of hard drive crunch time. He did an inspection on the drive with some software and it determined it had only about 30% life remaining. It had been in use for almost 5 1/2 years. He installed a new Samsung solid state drive, which cut the startup time from five minutes plus to around 30 seconds. I'll keep an eye on ShopKey and let you guys know how it performs on the new drive after a few days of usage.

Re: Memory or Lagging Issues?
I have converted most of my machines to SSD hard drives for other reasons but the performance improvements have been incredible. Just an FYI.

I am just getting started this morning, opening all of my software, printing documents, etc. Haven't started doing orders yet, but I can already tell the difference. It's like having a brand new computer.Pauls Automotive wrote:I have converted most of my machines to SSD hard drives for other reasons but the performance improvements have been incredible.
